"It takes a village to raise a child" is a proverb that means that an entire community of people must provide for and interact positively with children for those children to experience and grow in a safe and healthy environment.
The proverb has been attributed to African cultures. In Swahili, the proverb “Asiye funzwa na mamae hufunzwa na ulimwengu” means roughly the same: "Whomsoever is not taught by the mother will be taught with the world."
This is a fitting reference back to my father who was born in Kenya and spoke Swahili, who became Nikki’s father figure after her dad passed away. My father was also a mechanical engineer who supported and encouraged me to follow my passion, regardless of gender.
Today I want to pay tribute to the VILLAGE that helped raise Nikki. This village consisted of family members, friends and colleagues with long standing relationships that became extended family.
Nikki, I am so proud of you, the beautiful soul you are and the generous human being that you became. Our life path together was not easy, it was fraught with many challenges and difficult circumstances that we weathered together. So many people loved you for so many different reasons. The circle that your life touched was vast and inclusive. You had many surrogate families who took you under their wing to help you along your way.
I cannot begin to name everyone personally, but today I want to mention the key companies that supported us with projects that contributed to our financial stability and wellbeing. With a career spanning three decades, and Nikki joining me in the last decade, the list is long and there were many smaller contributors that are not mentioned here, but we value everyone for the role that they played in our lives
I have placed an * next to the project that Nikki directly contributed towards as part of the professional team.
